TOSOTH and NaNoWriMo 2013

Some2013-Participant-Square-Button deadlines, I’m learning, are deader than others. Instead of holding firm, they flop over and let their project slink around the finish line and take a jaunt into the land of further delay.

The Other Side of the Horizon’s publishing deadline turned out to be one of these.

I had hoped to have it out this month, but now we’re looking at an early November release instead.

Oh, well. The point is, the book is still coming. It’s just taken a little longer than anticipated. I should have some very good news on that front in a few days. *grin*

In other news, tomorrow is November 1st, which, as I’m sure most of you know, marks the beginning of National November Novel Writing Month 2013. (NaNoWriMo, for short—you can find it here.) The goal, of course, is to write 50,000 words during November.

I’ve spent the last several weeks debating whether or not I was going to participate this year. It’s a fun, growth-inspiring challenge, and I have a story in-progress I could work on, but I had hoped to be finished with the rough draft of the third book in The Guardians series and well into the editing process by now. Unfortunately, I hit a rough patch when the story took a couple of unexpected swerves, and that slowed things down.

So, in the interests of finishing Book 3 before the end of the year, I decided I might as well do NaNo after all. Besides, so far, this November doesn’t look like it’s going to be anywhere near as crazy as it was last year.

(Of course, I say that now…) 🙂

‘The Other Side of the Horizon’ Cover Art!

I’m very happy to finally be able to reveal cover art for The Other Side of the Horizon, my first foray into the world of YA steampunk. 😀

Loved this picture from the moment I set eyes on it.

More information on TOSOTH’s release date will be forthcoming in the next week or so.

TOSOTH News

steampunk159__alt_iconsI have great news: The Other Side of the Horizon is finally done! I finished the last few bits of editing and sent it off to the betas this past week. By the grace of God, and barring any unforeseen major complications, it should be published in the next couple of weeks. 😀

I’m pretty happy about that.

TOSOTH was an adventure to write—the story took a number of surprising twists and turns and there were more than a few occasions where I had absolutely no idea what would happen next. That may sound frightening—and I’ll be honest, sometimes it is—but it’s also a lot of fun because it means the writing process is never, ever boring. Plus, it’s my first foray into the world of steampunk. (Which I didn’t know I’d be doing when I started.) That was an exciting and fascinating journey, let me tell you.

Cover art will be forthcoming in the next week or so.

For those of you in the U.S., hope y’all are having a good Labor Day. For the rest of you, I hope y’all are having a good Monday.

Quick Update

steampunk159__alt_iconsAs some of you may notice, a few things have been changed/updated around the site. Didn’t realize until yesterday that a few sections hadn’t been updated in…longer than I care to admit. 😀

Particularly the Novel Excerpts page. That’s been fixed, so you’ll be able to jump straight to the sample chapters for either Bad Faith or Portal Woes.

Now, back to my regularly scheduled house cleaning…

Time and Space

book_iconThe timezone shifts in Portal Woes have been on my mind all week. Two of my sisters flew to Russia on Monday and they’re now eight hours ahead of us. That’s been interesting experience on this end—thinking about what they’re experiencing in adjusting to that kind of change has vividly reminded me of writing PW.

Book 3 doesn’t have that many timezone jumps, for which I’ve found myself profoundly grateful. (So far, I haven’t had to resort to a complicated spreadsheet to keep everybody straight. :D) It’s had a few unexpected plot twists though.

As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve been looking forward to writing this particular book in The Guardians since I first started plotting the series. I didn’t realize until I started writing it, however, how much of the story I was anticipating telling occurs  after the book’s midway point…leaving me with half a book to write before I even get there. 😛 Still, it’s been fun picking up where PW left off and running with it. (I never cease to be amazed how touching one plot aspect lights up three more I need to consider.) I should cross the halfway point sometime next week.

Still don’t have a title, but I’ve got several possibilities. I’m sure it’ll shake itself out soon.

TOSOTH’s edits are progressing nicely. I finished all the minor changes; now I’m working on the major changes. It’s a bit daunting to look at a stack of manuscript sheets all marked up with orange ink (not usually an orange fan, but when I thought of TOSOTH, that was the color that came to mind), but once I really get into the sections, they’re not quite as bad as they seem. Most of the sections that need to be fixed are either places where I need more details, or else earlier scenes that need to be tweaked to fit later scenes. I’m hoping to have TOSOTH finished by the end of the month and off to beta readers, but we’ll see how it goes.

My sisters going to Russia has also made me think about global publishing, and how thanks to the internet ebooks in particular are accessible to people in other countries. (Speaking of which,  Kris Rusch had a really good article about global publishing this week.) Currently, Russia is one of the countries that doesn’t have much in the way of digital stores for her citizens to buy or publish ebooks, but it looks like Amazon is working to expand into Russia. This is very cool from both a reader and a writer’s perspective. Affordable ebooks (whether in Russian, English, or whatever) = everyone wins.

I can’t help thinking it’s a great time to be reader. (Or a writer. :D)

Update

liveworkcreateI don’t know about any of y’all, but the last few weeks turned out to be quite a bit busier than I anticipated. I fully intended to write several blog posts about various things, but as you can see, it didn’t happen.

Despite all the busyness, my summer is off to a good start. Sunshine, green leaves, iced coffee, and the front porch. 🙂 Plus, the last few weeks have still been pretty productive.

I finished the rough draft of Lady Ink the end of May, and since then I’ve been writing Book 3 of The Guardians and working on the edits for TOSOTH. I finished implementing the first round of edits yesterday (which were all the piddly little changes like spelling, typos, name changes, ect.) and then I’ll start smoothing out a few plot issues that cropped up. It’s going to be a fun story; I’m really looking forward to publishing it.^_^

While I was finishing up Lady Ink, however, I ran into a few interesting obstacles. I wrote the story’s grand climax and thought that would be the end of it, but to my astonishment the characters kept going… and going…until I realized there was no way I was going to be able to wrap up the last few subplots before the end of the book. (It was like wrestling the literary equivalent of an octopus, with it occasionally sprouting an extra appendage.) My characters basically held the final chapters hostage until I gave up and accepted that Lady Ink will probably require a sequel to finish the story properly. Go figure. 😛

But, that’s half the fun of writing–following characters on their journeys. Love it when things take twists and turns I didn’t anticipate…even if it means writing an extra book. 🙂

For those of you in the U.S., have a good 4th of July!
